Instead of actually creating emotional bits that live together and represent what’s on the screen, Yamane just chucks motifs from area and character themes to add a sense of value. These pieces do show improvement yet how some of this advancement was accomplished is beyond cheap. When one goes through these pieces on this score it’s obvious that this shortcoming was brought to Yamane’s attention as there’s an attempt to stop the bleeding. In this respect it’s almost akin the two Nintendo 64 Castlevania titles where the moodiness is deliberate and delicious as hell.īefore getting into why the Curse of Darkness Original Soundtrack has such a surprising pulse, it’s best to tackle the most contested part of the previous console-based Castlevania release: cut scene themes. The center of this soundtrack is more subdued and nuanced than its predecessors and successors. Most of it, well the more important part of it, doesn’t pop out of your speakers screaming for attention like a banshee. Different doesn’t automatically equate to quality, but those that take time to explore Michiru Yamane’s music for Curse of Darkness may realize that there’s another side of the Castlevania experience that they’re unaware of here. There’s some good nestled deep, down within this title and it’s good because it’s different. I say minor because while what follows is based on the ideas of objectivity. Messy as the game is at its core, it manages to pack a few minor triumphs. However, despite all its failings Curse of Darkness is fascinating. Oddly enough this oversight is one of my most cherished memories of the game because such imperfection personifies the game to a tee. Personally, I can’t help but be amused that a professional artist with the skill of Ayami Kojima would overlook this it reminds me of the final scene of Bettlejuice when the titular character’s head is shrunk with pixie dust after butting in line. Look at the size of Hector’s head in relation to the rest of his body. At a glance there doesn’t appear to be anything wrong with this kickass picture of Hector, but as you start to examine this piece of artwork you may start to notice that the body proportions are off. If you have access to a copy of the game (the NTSC version) take a good look at the front section of the jacket. I know you’re never supposed to judge a book by its cover, but in this case the cover’s quite telling. That being said, I don’t have a clue how you function but I’m glad you do.Īs curious as it sounds, I should have known what I was getting into with Castlevania: Curse of Darkness. Being erected out of various structures and not representing anything close to stability you embody that arts and crafts project I just mentioned. Come to think about it, I take back what I said earlier. Dynasty Warriors? You can do that as well only without with the massive mobs and framerate dips. Pokemon? Yeah, we can do that only we’ll call them Innocent Devils and make them so unbalanced they break the game. Almost every prior Castlevania release had some sense of place and purpose yet you were a perplexing amalgamation of spare parts barrowed from the strangest places. Playing a big part in this confusing equation are my thoughts that you have no identity. At least you’re not being used as a coaster or elected to be a part of some cobbled together arts and crafts project. Even now you sit on my shelf, collecting dust and decaying, never to be touched again. You’re not worth my attention and you know it. Every time I boot you up I can’t follow through. I know you’re no good for me yet my memories remain. It’s like an acute case of Stockholm Syndrome. As a game I’ll never understand what bonds me to you.
